Knockroon to Dumfries House 2 November

Last week the rain was to stop by 10am, this week it was to have started. And the forecast wasn’t wrong. There was no dissent to abandoning the Corsencon walk in favour of a pavement walk, to avoid the muck, to Dumfries House.

In persistent, but not too heavy, rain Jimmy led us from the car park at Knockroon down to the swimming pool and from there we crossed over the new pitches on the site of the old school and on to the road up past the hospital before following the A70 to Dumfries House. By the time we reached the café the rain was getting heavier, and the wind was rising, so the shelter and warmth of the café were most welcome. Coffee and scones/cakes/rolls were taken here in a most leisurely of fashions before eventually we had to move on.

We didn’t linger and made our way up to the Avenue which took us on to Barony Road and into Auchinleck. By this time the rain was heavy and the wind was making the use of umbrellas difficult, but we reached the cars at about quarter past twelve, having done, according to today’s statistician, Malcolm, five and a quarter miles. Most made for the covered archway at Knockroon for shelter whilst they got changed, and there were some sights to behold as the guys stripped off.

Our problems weren’t over for the day though as we got wet again moving from the cars to the very quiet Black Bull in Mauchline for FRT. We were well received and, seeing how bedraggled we were, the barmaid put the heating on and brought us some crisps and sausage rolls. A nice gesture to show their appreciation of our custom. It was still pouring when we left but, towards the coast, it began to dry up.
